The following is from our amazing Therapy Department. “J.C admitted into Forbes Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare with paraplegia, and was completely dependent with all transfers, movement, bathing and dressing tasks. J.C was unable to feel his legs and was not able to move them actively. During the course of therapy of therapy treatment and his own determination and active involvement in goals and plan of care, his progress was tremendous. He obtained sensation in bilateral legs and was able to actively move them and participate in strength training. J.C completed transfers with an assist of one, completed bathing and dressing routines with an assist of one and initiated walking with assistive LiteGait technologies. J.C was able to gain enough function and strength to qualify for an advanced stay at a Spinal Cord Aggressive Rehab Center in September and is now residing at home! “
The following is from our amazing Nursing Department, “When J.C first arrived here at Forbes he was on and Vent and a Trach, he was in Respiratory Failure, and was admitted on to our fourth floor Ventilator unit. Due to the tireless efforts of our Respiratory Therapists, J.C was weened and transferred off of that floor and on to out fifth floor unit which is the short term unit. Because of the help from the Therapy Department he was eventually able to go on to a more advanced therapy setting and went home from there”.
The following is from our Concierge, “Time and time again J.C told me how happy he was over here, how the food was great, and that the nursing staff was good too. To sum up how he really thought about Forbes he had these wonderful and inspiring words to share, you got me walking. When I first came here everyone, my kids, my doctor, said that I wouldn’t walk again. I had nerve damage. I’m walking now but I ain’t done yet. You have to be determined in order to succeed. 35 feet now, who knows how many in the future! All in all, this is another great job done by all of the staff at Forbes Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare”.

How did this patient hear about Forbes? He lives in the community
Details of Experience:
When Mr. PM first arrived at Forbes Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, he made it very clear what his biggest expectation was, he said, “I expect to be provided with good care and to keep me informed with any changes in my condition; to treat me with courtesy and respect, and also to keep my wife informed”. This is something that we at Forbes took to heart and made it our goal to uphold our end of the bargain. I had many conversations with him and his wife over the course of his stay. The first few days were hard for him due to his weakness which affected his gait pattern and mobility. But he kept on working at it, after the end of the first few days he told me, that he felt that he was getting stronger. Our Physical Therapists gave it their best and a short while later Mr. PM was able to return home to his family. Before he left he said, “You have been helpful when I needed it and took care of all of my problems. You were very attentive to my needs. You communicated with my family and asked if we needed anything and checked of everything. You made sure that I always had what I needed or even wanted- Carl Anderson (Unit Manager) always came in to check on me, he was very polite and concerned about my welfare and the Physical Therapy department was very helpful, they all gave me good advice, and they made sure that I was going at a pace that was healthy for me to recover. Regarding the Concierges Service he said, I had a good experience, I was hard on you because when I was in pain it was hard for me to concentrate and figure things out. You connected me to the right people.” And he appreciated that our Doctors came to check up on him without him asking and that our Recreation Department had a unique approach and caters to different people. In all Mr. PM enjoyed his stay here at Forbes evidenced by the fact that a few weeks after he discharged he called me to thank us for everything that we did for him and that he appreciates all the help that he was able to get here, he also mentioned that he may stop in to say hi to his friends here.

Reason for Stay: Therapy post Hip Replacement
How did this patient hear about Forbes? From the hospital.
MR. N.M came to Forbes Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare following a Left Hip Replacement on which he had a prior repair done. When he arrived he was unable to ambulate under his own power and needed a wheelchair to move around. From his first day with us we attended to his every need, he stated that the “Concierge was very helpful and attentive to his needs as was the entire staff”. Granted his first night with us was a little nerve wracking for him due to the unfamiliar surroundings and the concierge had to go back after hours to help him navigate the process which he did so along with tremendous support from the Unit Manager and the nursing staff in general. By the very next morning MR. N.M stated, “this place is great, thank you so much for all of your help!” Under the watchful eye of our dedicated therapists he made progress in leaps and bounds, through Gait Training and Therapeutic Activates, just a short time after he arrived, MR. N.M left our building with a smile and a firm handshake- on his own two feet he walked out of the building with the aid of a cane and as our Unit Manager fondly recalled, “Sure I remember him, he literally jumped in the air when he left”. In the words of Julius Caesar, “I came, I saw, I conquered,” maybe this is the same thing, after all, he came in rolling and he left walking.

Reason for Stay: Rehab post hip-replacement
How did this patient hear about Forbes? From her daughter who lived close by.
Mrs. BS was a 60 year old woman with a history of DJD of bilateral hips, Hypertension, Carpal Tunnel and Herniated disk of the lumbar and cervical spine. Prior to admission here at Forbes Center for Rehabilitation and Health Care Mrs. BS presented with low back and pain in her hips. She was followed by the surgeon at an outside hospital who realized the need for a left hip replacement. Mrs. BS was admitted to Forbes Center on 7/3/2015 for rehabilitation after having a left hip replacement. During her stay at the facility she received Nursing care, Physical and Occupational therapy. Upon admission Mrs. BS required physical therapy to help with her transfers, standing balance and ambulation due to decreased mobility after her surgery. The initial physical therapy goals were for Mrs. BS was to ambulate 50 feet with supervision, to increase her ability to do light housekeeping and activities with minimal assistance.
Forbes provided professional care for this patient who needed assistance with mobility, activities of daily living and ability to ambulate up the steps. Upon discharge from the facility Mrs. BS was able to ambulate 100 feet with assistive device, demonstrate modified independence with completing light housekeeping, and also to have the ability to climb stairs.
Mrs. BS made great strides in reaching her therapeutic goals here at Forbes.
